全書共分為八個(gè)部分(PART)。每個(gè)部分含若干個(gè)單元(Unit)，共42個(gè)單元。每個(gè)單元由一篇課文和一篇閱讀材料組成，共計(jì)84篇。課文和閱讀材料均選自原版英文教科書、科技報(bào)告、著作、專業(yè)期刊、國際會(huì)議論文集等。其中及時(shí)部分1～4，介紹環(huán)境科學(xué)與工程概述和歷史；第二部分5～11，介紹大氣化學(xué)和空氣污染及其防治；第三部分12～19，介紹水污染來源種類、水化學(xué)、各種污水處理技術(shù)、處理單元設(shè)備等；第四部分20～23，為固體廢物及處理方法；第五部分24～27，介紹其他污染及控制技術(shù)；第六部分28～35，為環(huán)境管理，包括介紹環(huán)境影響及其評(píng)價(jià)、環(huán)境監(jiān)控和分析及采樣程序、環(huán)境政策與策略；第七部分36～38，生態(tài)系統(tǒng)與生態(tài)群落，介紹環(huán)境生物與生態(tài)圈，環(huán)境生態(tài)學(xué)，生態(tài)與生命系統(tǒng)等；第八部分39～42，作為拓展，介紹綠色化學(xué)與技術(shù)，清潔生產(chǎn)，環(huán)境與可持續(xù)發(fā)展、清潔生產(chǎn)工藝及其綠色化學(xué)過程。每篇課文均配有與課文相對(duì)應(yīng)的練習(xí)，主要以主觀練習(xí)題為主，包括閱讀與詞匯練習(xí)，英譯漢與漢譯英，用英語回答問題及寫出課文或某一段落的summary等。為便于學(xué)生自學(xué)，本書每課配有單詞和詞組表，并對(duì)課文的難點(diǎn)做必要的注釋，全書附有總詞匯表。
本書是根據(jù)《大學(xué)英語教學(xué)大綱》(理工科本科用)專業(yè)閱讀部分的要求編寫的，是高等學(xué)校環(huán)境科學(xué)、環(huán)境工程或相關(guān)專業(yè)的教材，也可供同等英語程度環(huán)境科學(xué)工作者及環(huán)境工程師或相關(guān)領(lǐng)域的科技人員使用。
