外教社跨文化交際叢書:跨文化交際理論建構(gòu)》涵蓋了一系列經(jīng)過篩選的跨文化交際理論。為了這部著作的出版,Gudykunst做了大量的基礎(chǔ)性工作。在此過程中,他指出,"如今,涉及跨文化交際各個(gè)層面的理論至少有15個(gè)。"(Gudykunst,2002,p.183)這些理論可分成七大類:意義建構(gòu)、溝通準(zhǔn)則、文化模式、調(diào)整和適應(yīng)、身份認(rèn)同的形成和調(diào)整、人際交流的心理過程,以及傳播的組群和網(wǎng)絡(luò)。(Klyukanov,2005,p.1)遺憾的是,盡管Gudykunst收錄的理論涉及面很廣,但他卻將相當(dāng)一部分理論排除在外。比如,他只字未提有關(guān)價(jià)值觀的眾多理論(或許他認(rèn)為價(jià)值觀的理論只是對(duì)文化模式的解釋),以及有關(guān)沖突、非言語交際、符號(hào)模式的交流(或符號(hào)學(xué))等一系列在跨文化領(lǐng)域頗具影響力的理論。這些沒有被Gudykunst收錄的理論,在其他許多跨文化教材中都作為重點(diǎn)進(jìn)行了介紹。應(yīng)該承認(rèn),《外教社跨文化交際叢書:跨文化交際理論建構(gòu)》缺乏的是一種多范式的理論視野,如Martin和Nakayama(1999)總結(jié)出的四個(gè)典型范式,或John Baldwin等人(2006)提到的五個(gè)范式;或者說是Gudykunst忽略了"交際的理論建構(gòu)作為一種社會(huì)實(shí)踐的其他表述方法。"
